Your team

You will be part of the Fiscal Policies Division in the Directorate General Economics. Our Division has 25 members of staff responsible for assessing the national fiscal policies of EU Member States and the euro area fiscal stance. We provide fiscal forecasts, monitor public debt sustainability and perform analytical work on a variety of related topics, including the interaction between fiscal and monetary policy. We are also responsible for analysing issues related to the architecture of Economic and Monetary Union, particularly in relation to the EU’s fiscal framework. We collaborate closely with several other divisions in our Directorate General, as well as euro area national central banks.

Your role

As a trainee in the Fiscal Policies Division you will:
  • support research analysts and economists in our Division, contributing to both short-term tasks and long-term projects;
  • help maintain and develop the Division’s databases for monitoring fiscal developments and related macroeconomic and financial market indicators;
  • contribute to the enhancement of the Division’s forecasting, modelling and other analytical tools;
  • support the preparation of the Division’s regular internal and external products, including its contributions to the ECB’s Economic Bulletin, for instance by producing tables, charts, presentations and other analytical input in collaboration with other ECB business areas;
  • contribute to the Division’s research projects by conducting empirical analysis and macroeconomic modelling.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential: 
  • a bachelor’s degree or higher in economics, finance, mathematics, statistics, data science, computer science, engineering or another related field;
  • experience with statistical, econometric and data science packages and programming languages (e.g. MATLAB, Python, R, Stata, Julia, EViews);
  • experience in processing and analysing fiscal, macroeconomic or financial market data and programming automated data tasks;
  • a good knowledge of the MS Office package;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Desired: 
  • a master’s degree or higher (or master’s degree studies in the final stages of completion) in economics, finance, mathematics, statistics, data science, computer science, engineering or another related field;
  • strong programming skills in one or more programming languages (e.g. MATLAB, Python, R, Stata, Julia, EViews);
  • initial experience in applying machine learning algorithms or using AI tools for analytical purposes, with a strong interest in developing further expertise in this area.

Your team

 

You will be part of the Legislation Division in the Directorate General Legal Services. Our Division is responsible for preparing the ECB’s legal acts in the official languages of the EU, reviewing legal texts for legal, linguistic and terminological consistency and maintaining a database of relevant terminology. We are also responsible for publishing and disseminating the ECB’s legal framework and other legal publications.
In the field of banking supervision, we provide advice and expertise on the drafting of ECB supervisory decisions and are involved in preparing and reviewing such decisions. We also contribute to horizontal banking supervision projects and the implementation of common policies in this field.
In your role as a trainee lawyer-linguist, you will be part of the team of around 40 lawyer-linguists in our Division, and will work closely with them and other relevant business areas across all of the ECB’s fields of competence.

Your team

 

You will be part of the legal team of the Secretariat of the European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB). The ESRB is an independent EU body responsible for the macroprudential oversight of the EU financial system and for preventing and mitigating systemic risk.
The ESRB brings together representatives from around 80 institutions, including central banks and supervisors, as well as independent experts. It collects and analyses information on a wide range of financial institutions and markets, monitors macro-financial developments, and issues warnings and recommendations to policymakers and supervisors. The ESRB Secretariat is part of the European Central Bank (ECB) and provides analytical, statistical, logistical and administrative support to the ESRB. Our tasks include identifying and analysing systemic risks to the EU financial system, assessing and proposing macroprudential policies, preparing ESRB warnings and recommendations and monitoring their implementation, cooperating with supervisory and other macroprudential authorities, supporting ESRB working groups and preparing documents for meetings of the ESRB General Board and its substructures.
In your role as a legal trainee, you will be part of a legal team of five members of staff responsible for supporting, by providing legal advice, the work of other teams in the ESRB Secretariat and linking their tasks in financial stability and macroprudential policy to the legal framework. With their focus on risk assessment, banking and non-bank financial intermediaries, these teams provide analytical input into risk and policy reports, working closely with financial stability experts, analysts and trainees from across the Secretariat. The focus of your traineeship will therefore depend on the work of these other teams. Your tasks as a member of the legal team will also consist of helping draft ESRB legal acts, reports and other publications, assisting assessment teams during assessments of compliance with ESRB recommendations and interacting with member institutions.

You will be part of the Directorate Risk Management, a dynamic team of professionals responsible for developing and maintaining the financial risk management frameworks that govern the Eurosystem’s monetary policy operations and the ECB’s investment operations. Moreover, the Directorate supports the ECB in achieving operational resilience by implementing sound non-financial risk, business continuity and critical incident management practices.
In your role as trainee, you will be part of the Operational Risk and Business Continuity Section, which is currently working on several emerging risks and opportunities, including in relation to adoption of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, the response to geopolitical developments, and cyber resilience.

You will be part of the Compliance and Governance Division in the Directorate General Secretariat. Our Division has around 25 members of staff across three teams who are responsible for implementing and continuously developing the ECB’s ethics and public access regimes. We provide advice to ECB staff on ethics-related issues, organise training and awareness activities and coordinate the ECB’s responses to public access requests as well as requests and queries from national authorities and the European Ombudsman.
In your role as a compliance and governance trainee, you will be part of one of our three teams. The Ethics and Integrity team promotes ethical standards of behaviour within the ECB, the Eurosystem and European banking supervision; the Governance and Risk Monitoring team monitors conduct risk and strengthens governance; and the Transparency and Access to Documents team works on accountability and transparency issues.

Your role

 

As a trainee in one of our teams you will:
  • contribute to outreach and knowledge management activities by developing ethics-related training and resources, such as workshops, awareness campaigns and e-learning courses;
  • engage with staff and provide advice on ethics-related matters, including conflicts of interest, gifts and hospitality and post-employment restrictions;
  • support transparency initiatives by assessing document disclosure requests under the public access regime and other applicable frameworks;
  • conduct policy or legal research and benchmarking exercises on topical issues;
  • regularly monitor and report on current developments in the fields of ethics, integrity, governance, conduct risk management and transparency at national and EU levels;
  • contribute to improving internal processes through digitalisation and automation and analysing and managing data by preparing statistics and maintaining dashboards.

Qualifications, experience and skills

 

Essential: 
  • a bachelor’s degree or higher in law, ideally from a university within the EU;
  • a sound understanding of EU institutions, EU administrative law, and banking or financial law;
  • a sound understanding of current trends and challenges in ethics, integrity, conduct risk management, governance or transparency at national, EU or international level;
  • a good knowledge of the MS Office package;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Desired:
  • a demonstrable interest in ethics, good governance or accountability and transparency issues;
  • experience in conducting legal analysis as part of a team;
  • experience with analysing data and visualising information using Excel or other tools;
  • exposure to process analysis and/or optimisation.

Your team

 

You will be part of the Secretariat of the European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB). The ESRB is an independent EU body responsible for the macroprudential oversight of the EU financial system and the prevention and mitigation of systemic risk.
The ESRB brings together representatives from around 80 institutions, including central banks and supervisors, as well as independent experts. It collects and analyses information on a wide range of financial institutions and markets, monitors macro-financial developments, and issues warnings and recommendations to policymakers and supervisors. The ESRB Secretariat is part of the European Central Bank (ECB) and provides analytical, statistical, logistical and administrative support to the ESRB. Our tasks include identifying and analysing systemic risks to the EU financial system, assessing and proposing macroprudential policies, preparing ESRB warnings and recommendations and monitoring their implementation, cooperating with supervisory and other macroprudential authorities, supporting ESRB working groups and preparing documents for meetings of the ESRB General Board and its substructures.
In your role as a trainee, you will contribute to the analytical work of the team to identify and assess systemic risks in the EU financial sector and to develop the policies to address such risks. You will provide input for the ESRB’s working groups and substructures. The content of your traineeship will depend on your skillset and the specific projects the Secretariat is involved in.

  • contribute to the assessment of macroprudential policies in the EU;
  • participate in and contribute to the work of ESRB committees.

  • proficiency in empirical analysis using statistical and data management packages (e.g. EViews, Excel VBA, MATLAB, Python, R, R Shiny, SAS, Stata, SQL and Tableau);
  • an advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, in particular Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
